Old School vs Modern

Do you prefer the 16bit classic look or the more Modern Mobile look as depicted below?
It's been a while since any news so here's an update! This week I'm looking into new power ups and juicing the game up in general. Here's a gif of an (unfinished) prototype for a flame portal. I'd like it to destroy objects in its way and give the player the ability to collect all coins in its path. How's it looking so far? What would you like to see in the game as a power up?
New stage, neon city!

So the tilesheet for the neon city zone (working title) is pretty much finished. Here's a test scene that I threw together. I gotta say I'm pretty happy with it. I think I'll make the background lanterns flicker with some of the window lights turning off and on at intervals. Also note that the sign is blank because I'll programmatically add the text and lights to them. How's it looking? All suggestions welcome!

Here's a concept I'm sending off to my artist for the next stage. Thanks to Brian K for the suggestion of "Tokyo-style", it gave me a brain-flash and I think it 's going to come out a lot better than my previous idea ;) What kind of obstacles would you like to see in this stage?

This weekend I'm working on designs for the next stage, an Oriental-style level so now's a good a time to share designs for the industrial level. These are only mock ups at the moment but give a good indication of how it'll look. How's it looking?
